The Rogue River: An American
Treasure
The Rogue River in Southern Oregon is one
of the American West's most famous and captivating waterways. Rogue river
adventures take place in a canyon of indescribable beauty. It is due to this
beauty and all of its outstanding natural characteristics that in 1968 the
Rogue river was designated as one of the nation's first Wild and Scenic Rivers.
It is a place of rafting, fishing, hiking, sightseeing, and lodging
splendor.
Throughout its course from the towering mountains that
surround Crater Lake to the magnificent Oregon coast, the Rogue river canyon is
home to an abundance of wildlife including deer, otter, black bear, raptors and
waterfowl. It is common to witness the arrow-like plunge of an osprey fishing
or the playful antics of otters on the river's edge.

Each section of the Rogue river is
captivating. The Upper Rogue, near Crater Lake and Prospect, is a twisty,
isolated river that even disappears completely into an underground lava tube.
The camping and hiking in this area is very rewarding. The section near Shady
Cove provides fishing and Rogue river rafting float trip enthusiasts an easily
accessible and charming river experience. In Grants Pass you can also fish and
board a jet boat for an invigorating and beautiful trip through Hellgate
Canyon.
The heart of the river, the Wild and Scenic Section between
Galice and Agness, offers world class whitewater, scenery, and solitude. For 34
miles Rogue
river rafting trips stairstep down through a canyon rich in history,
geology, flora and fauna. It is here that the river rafting trips are at their
finest and the drift boat fishing charters, for
Rogue river salmon fishing trips and
steelhead trips, are beyond compare.
The Rogue then makes its final
reach to the ocean, through a broadening canyon of rich vegetation and tall
mountains. Here jet boats from the coast race upstream and thrill passengers
with bouncy rides up and down rapids. Additionally, king salmon frequently over
forty pounds are landed on powerboat charters here and at the mouth of the
river, near the friendly and scenic town of Gold Beach.
